This website tells the story of Shays' Rebellion, and a crucial period in our nation's founding when the survival of the republican experiment in government was neither destined nor assured. Attention Writers!
Anne Springs Close Library is challenging you to a writing contest!

Guidelines for the writing contest:

Any person enrolled in at least one class can enter their written work.

The written work can be about anything that pertains to the environment.
For example, how we can help or the state the environment is in today.

Bodies of work can be Poems, short stories, essays etc.

The deadline for submission is April 20, 2009

In collaboration with Earth day by displaying original recycled works of art in the Anne Springs Close Library. The Library Club is encouraging students and faculty to submit their own works.

The"One Book, One Community" reading event has started at York Tech with the book "Last Night at the Lobster" by Stuart O'Nan. The book tells the story of the manager and workers at a Red Lobster restaurant that is going to shut down that night.
The "One Book One Community" program is an American Library Association (ALA) Public Program initiative. "Librarians are putting together incredible ‘One Book, One Community’ programs that bring attention to libraries and the value of reading and book discussion programs. ” said ALA Executive Director Keith Michael Fiels.

Art Exhibit at the Library

Dr. Macdonald’s ongoing fine arts program, Arts4U2, is proud to present The Art of Kim Grant, Tuesday, June 3, through Friday, June 27 in Anne Springs Close Library at York Technical College. Mrs. Grant will be speaking on Friday, June 20, at 10:30 a.m. in L113.

Mrs. Grant received her BA in Art Education from Winthrop University in 1995. She teaches Art at Northwestern High School. Painting is her love, but she specializes in pottery as well. Kim Grant is the wife of Martin Grant, Chair of the English Department at York Technical College and the mother of three children.

The library is open Monday – Thursday 7:30 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. and Friday 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Library Essay Contest!

Coinciding with National Library Week in April, the library also held its first annual essay contest, with the topic of, "How do you see technology impacting the library of tomorrow?"

Essays were awarded points based on the following criteria: originality, creativity, practicality, plausibility, relevance, implementation, spelling and grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and overall.

We presented awards to four students for their creative and thought-provoking essays at the York Tech awards day on May 6.

There are a number of tutorials available through the library website, under the "Ask A Librarian" link and then "Interactive Tutorials."

Attention COL 101 students!

There has been some confusion with the COL 101 worksheet that is being used currently. Since we have recently updated the website, certain features are no longer included on the site, including the eJournal Portal. The question that directs you to use eJournal Portal can be answered using PowerSearch instead.

The following are the steps for answering this question using PowerSearch. If you are doing this search from home or from another off-campus location, you will need the remote user name and password, which can be found if you log onto Campus Cruiser and look under “Announcements,” or by contacting the library.

1) Go to the library website at http://www.yorktech.com/library
2) Click on the “Articles” link at the top of the page.
3) Click on where it says “PowerSearch.”
4) A screen with the heading “Basic Search” will come up.
5) At the top of the page, where it says “Find,” type the word music.
6) Toward the middle of the page, where it says “by publication date(s),” click the circle to the left of “After” and use the drop down menus to put in 1, September, and 2003.
7) Toward the bottom of the page, where it says ‘by publication,” type in General Music Today.
8) Click the “Search” button next to the “Find” box.
9) You will get a list of articles that are about music, published after Sept. 1, 2003, and from the publication titled General Music Today.
10) Choose one of the articles listed and write down the information indicated on your worksheet.

Did you know?...The Story of Thanksgiving....

Thanksgiving as we know it know is a holiday that started out much different than we think, and indeed, there has even been much controversy surrounding it!

Historians say that the explorer Juan Ponce de Leon celebrated a day of thanks on the coast of Florida after successfully crossing the Atlantic Ocean in 1513. Other Thanksgiving celebrations took place throughout the 1500 and 1600's, by the mid-1600's, harvest festivals were being celebrated by the New England colonists.

In 1789, President George Washington proclaimed that the last Thursday in November would be a "Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer." However, as the years passed, the celebration of the day fell out of favor and less and less people celebrated it.

Writer Sarah Hale lobbied strongly for the revitalization of the holiday by composing and sending letters to the Presidents in office, as well as writing editorials and articles for various magazines. Finally, President Lincoln, and every President after, declared the fourth Tuesday of November to be Thanksgiving.

However, in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt tried to change the day from the fourth Thursday of the month to the third, with the thought to lengthen the holiday shopping season to jump start the economy, which was mired in the Great Depression.

There was much outrage and disagreement, and in 1941, Roosevelt said that the attempt had not increased sales. Congress passed a resolution declaring the holiday to be celebrated the fourth Thursday in November, and the bill was passed into a law, finally protecting Thanksgiving and making it "official."

PASCAL Delivers! Coming Sept. 1!

Q: What is PASCAL Delivers?

A: PASCAL Delivers is South Carolina's virtual academic library. It enables students, faculty, and staff at South Carolina's colleges and universities to request books from any academic library in the state and receive those books at their own institution in just a few days.

Here at York Tech, students, faculty, and staff will be able to search the PASCAL catalog through YTC library's website, locate a book at any member library, and submit an electronic request. Books will then be delivered to the library via courier and requester will be notified by the library to come pick up their book

Celebrating Libraries and Library Workers

Every April, we celebrate National Library Week, celebrating library workers and all they do for the community. In conjunction with NLW, Anne Springs Close Library also celebrated National Library Worker's Day on April 17. Many of the school's faculty and staff stopped by or sent cards and emails to thank the library staff for how they have touched their lives.

One administrator wrote, "The instructional support and assistance you provide is vital to the mission of the College and to the success of our students and graduates. I appreciate your leadership in making a wide variety of resources available to students, faculty, and the community."

The staff appreciates knowing that our administrators value the library's contributions to the college community. It is not unusual to find a faculty or staff member in the library looking for information while taking classes to further their own education. We often find them searching for materials for a child's school project. Many come over to pick out a book to read in their down-time or check out an audio book for trips or commutes.

If you have not met the library staff, please stop in to say hello. You will meet some of the nicest people who will be happy to assist you with your information needs. It's the Cat in the Hat's 50th Birthday!

Happy 50th Birthday
“Cat in the Hat”

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the release of The Cat in the Hat. This often-read and well-loved children’s book was written by Theodore Suess Geisel (Dr. Suess) after he was challenged by his publisher to write an interesting children’s primer using a beginning reader’s list. After a year of work, the famous cat was out of the hat.

Beginning Thursday, February 8, the library will be making the reader’s list of 236 words available to faculty, staff, and students. We are looking for those interested in preparing a short story or poem using the words from the list, as did Dr. Suess. You can pick up your word list in the library or go to the seussville website http://www.seussville.com/CITH_50th/pdfs/tr_classic236words.pdf.

The NEA’s Read Across America program is encouraging all parents, grandparents, teachers and friends to read with or to the children in their lives on Friday, March 2, Dr. Suess’ Birthday. Look for your favorite Dr. Seuss book or other children’s literature in the PZ 7-10 section of the library.

On Wednesday, March 21, during the student activity period (11:30 am – 12:45 pm), we would like to invite anyone who would like to read their story to join us in the library.

On Friday, March 23, during the Faculty/Staff Friday Forum program, we will have some of our faculty and staff writers read their work and discuss the challenges faced in writing in a limited fashion.

The BLACK HISTORY MONTH Report contains information about culture, key people and their accomplishments, important issues and events, the civil rights movement and more.
This site is an excellent resource for tracing the history of blacks and learning about their contributions to the world.

The World Health - National Heart Month Report raises the awareness of issues related to heart disease and preventative measures. Included are articles about nutrition, exercise, treatment and other related topics. This site also contains information on health issues around the world.

Both reports contain articles, pictures, related maps and links to web sites. Suggested search terms to help locate additional information in your NewsBank products are listed to encourage further research. All articles are easily accessed and can be printed or e-mailed from within the Report.

Fortunately, most of us are not affected by these problems since the patch has been prepared before the potential virus, hack, or leak has been released to the masses. If you are a Microsoft product user, be sure to turn on the “Automatic Updates” feature so that your computer security will be up to date.

In today’s world, social communication is more than talking with a friend at lunch or on the phone. Social networking using the internet has become very popular with the advent of such sites as Facebook, MySpace, Yahoo! 360°, and BlackPlanet.com.

These sites offer free access to building your own webpage where you can meet new people and to stay in touch with family and friends. You can post pictures, messages, create your own blog, and much more. Access and security levels may vary as to how you set up the parameters for logging into your page.

There has been much controversy about these sites and how they are used. Log on to the library website and click on “Find Articles.” Choose any one of the resources under the “Magazines & Journals” link and type in the search term “social networking.” Look at a few of the articles. What are they saying about social networking? What do you think are the pros and cons of this particular use of technology?

Every month, the library displays books and other information concerning a specific holiday or event. For the month of October, we are showcasing Teen Read Week (Oct. 15 - 21) and reading in general. Recent displays have been on the following:

Banned Books Week

During Banned Books Week (Sept. 23 - Sept. 30) libraries, bookstores, and avid readers may chose to promote the freedom of reading materials that have been banned do to their content. Such books have included: Animal Farm; The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; and Fahrenheit 451 – a story about banning books! Today there are numerous websites promoting the freedom to read and books that been banned. Here are a few: Loyola University Chicago Libraries, The Online Books Page, & the American Library Association.

According to the American Library Association website, “Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one’s opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them.”

Hispanic Heritage Month

In the United States, Hispanic culture is celebrated with Hispanic Heritage Month from Sep. 15 through Oct. 15. Originally it began as the week starting with Sept 15 (passed by Congress in 1968); then in 1988 the celebration was extended to month (31 days). This month is in honor of a number of Independence Day celebrations including: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua all on Sept 15th, Mexico on the 16th, Chile on the 18th and many more days of honor throughout the month. New Research Guide

We have just developed a new research guide on the topic of American Literature. To access this research guide, go to the library website and click on the "Research Guides" link at the left of the page.

We have a collection of research guides on numerous topics. They are meant to be a starting point for doing research in a particular subject. Each one includes a list of select reference books; how to search the subject in the library's online catalog; eBooks; and appropriate databases, magazines, and web sites.

Reserve form

If you are a faculty or staff member and would like to put items on reserve at the library for your class, we now have an online form that you can submit. Go to the library website, and go to the "Special Services" link, then to "Faculty & Staff," then "Library Services," then "Academic Reserves."

You can fill out the form online and submit it electronically. You can then bring over or send to us via campus mail the items you would like for us to put on reserve, or, if they are items we already have, we can pull them from the shelves.

Here's some information and places to start:

Podcasting basically means to distribute or syndicate audio files online using RSS technology.
"RSS" stands for "real simple syndication" or "rich site summary."
Think of it like an online radio station.
End users can suscribe to regularly updated audio content, and then listen to whatever, whenever, wherever.
It's very portable. You can can listen to podcasts on your computer, via a smart phone, or through a digital media player.
Why all the buzz about podcasts? *You* have the control over what you listen to (it's like building your own audio newspaper), and there's a lot of variety, everything from independent to mainstream content, entertainment to technical information.
